The renewal period is slightly different depending on type 1 and type 2, but do you have to renew your driver’s license approximately every 7 to 10 years?

Driver’s License Renewal Cycle and Period
[Type 1 driver’s license]
After December 9, 2011, license holders and aptitude testers have a 10-year cycle (1-year period)
2011. 12. 8. For previous license holders and aptitude testers, 7-year cycle (6-month period)
[Class 2 driver’s license]
After December 9, 2011, license holders and aptitude testers have a 10-year cycle (1-year period)
2011. 12. 8. For previous license holders and aptitude testers, 9-year cycle (6-month period)
※ After December 9, 2011, for those aged 65 or older, regardless of type 1 or type 2, every 5 years
※ After December 9, 2011, holders of a class 2 license over the age of 70 are obliged to take an aptitude test when renewing their license.
※ After January 1, 2019, those aged 75 or older will receive a 3-year cycle, regardless of type 1 or type 2.

※ Internet application is only available to those with an existing driver’s license among Class 2 driver’s license holders.
※ If a holder of a class 2 license applies for renewal online, he/she visits the police station after the specified date, returns the old license, and issues the renewed license.

Fee 13,000 won (physical examination fee 6,000 won separately)
※ Only for Class 1 regular and Class 2 licenses over 70 years of age, physical examination is replaced with a medical certificate or statement of health checkup results (in this case, only one photo is required)
※ Candidates for the first type aptitude test can ‘register aptitude test photos’ and ‘print out aptitude test application forms’ through the safe driving integrated civil application website
※ If you have the National Health Insurance Service examination data among the subjects of the 1st type normal aptitude test, you can apply for the Internet aptitude test
※ Driver’s license holders aged 75 or older are subject to compulsory senior driver education, and can apply for online education

Exceeding the renewal period
[Type 1 driver’s license]
Fine of 30,000 won
License cancellation: 1 year from the day after the expiration date of the aptitude test
[Class 2 driver’s license]
Fine of 20,000 won (However, fine of 30,000 won for those aged 70 or older who are subject to the 2nd type of license aptitude test)
License cancellation: When 1 year has elapsed from the date following the date of expiry of the sex test (only for holders of a Class 2 license aged 70 years or older)
※ Within 5 years of license cancellation: Reissuance is possible by retaking only the physical examination and department (writing) within 5 years for Class 1 (exemption from technical and road driving)
※ After 5 years of license cancellation: Reissuance after repeating all subjects unless there are other reasons for exemption
Since these two types are the most common among driver’s license holders, it is recommended to apply for renewal online.
I also applied online as the renewal period was imminent, and visited the nearest police station to return the old license and get a new one.
If you only have a photo file ready, you can apply within 5 minutes, and the fee is also excluded, so it’s easy and nice.
